COCKSPUR CUP

WEARING PLAYS TRUE CAPTAIN'S INNINGS FOR BARROW

Barrow skipper Daryl Wearing was a hero with the bat

Barrow skipper Daryl Wearing played a true captain's role as his side made further progress in the ECB Cockspur Cup at the weekend.
Wearing, better known as a seam bowler, smashed a superb 88 not out off only 51 balls as a depleted Barrow side earned an impressive four-wicket victory at Bolton League side Eagley with five balls to spare.

Eagley had posted an imposing total of 282 for 6 earlier in the afternoon with their English qualified, Australian born professional Michael Rourke top-scoring with 83.
Iain Kermode was Barrow's best bowler with 3 for 50, Wearing returned figures of one for 35 and Guy Heffernan and Glen Kermode each picked up a wicket apiece.

Iain Kermode and Rob Lightfoot both reached the 40s and Paul Wilcock was eventually run out for a superb innings of 85 as Barrow chased down the huge total on a flat batting wicket.
And despite needing 118 off the last 18 overs, Wearing's heroics saw the visitors through.
They will now play fellow 3D Sports Northern Premier League side Fleetwood at home on Sunday 1 June.

Wearing said: "It's the first time I have ever played at Eagley and I certainly could not bowl on there week in week out. Eagley won the toss and elected to bat. We got off to a reasonable start as they lost their opening pair very cheaply. At 20 for 2, their professional arrived at the crease and steadied the ship.
"Once he was set, he really got going and for the next two hours we chased leather all around the ground. We eventually got him when he looked set for a big hundred.
"Everyone was a bit down at tea, but we knew we had to go out and be positive and try and get as close to their total as we possibly could.
"It was a great team effort, especially when we were down and out at tea, but the guys showed true grit and character to pull us through a very testing game."

Leyland showed the team work that has taken them to the top of the table in early season as they defeated Chester Boughton Hall at Fox Lane.
The Liverpool Competition side were dismissed for 191 despite a fine innings of 100 from captain and wicket-keeper Steve Ogilby and Warren Goodwin's 54.
Peter Cummings took 3 for 32, Stephen Cartwright 2 for 32 and skipper David Makinson 2 for 28.
With contributions all down the order Leyland won by three wickets with four balls to spare.
Ian Farrington top-scored with 35, Karl Cross made 33 and James Rounding was 23 not out at the close.

Karl Cross played his part in Leyland's impressive win

Afterwards Makinson said: "They set off very well thanks to some good batting being 117 for 1 after 25 overs and it looked as though we were going to be chasing a huge score. Thanks to Steve Cartwright and Peter Cummings we slowed them down so that they only scored 74 for 9 off the last 20 overs.
"Ogilby played extremely well and was last man out with two balls of the innings left.
"We then batted pretty consistently throughout the innings, without anyone getting a big score. The most telling partnership was between Farrington and Rounding, who came together at 123 for 6 in the 35th over, still 69 needed off 10.3 overs. They took us to 184 with nine balls left.

"Really we should have won the game more comfortably, we dropped both their major run scorers, which cost us directly 50 runs off their scores alone, never mind the partnerships that they were involved in.
"I was very pleased with the bowling of Steve Cartwright and Peter Cummings, neither of whom have bowled in the 1st X1 this year, they were very consistent and brought us back into a game that appeared to be slipping away.
"When we batted both Karl Cross and Chris Parkinson looked in great form, but sadly neither could go on to get that first big score of the season. All the batsmen looked comfortable, but when set, managed to get themselves out. I was very pleased for Faz (Ian Farrington) and Midders (James Rounding), those innings will have done their confidence a world of good."

Fleetwood defeated Keswick at Broadwater by six wickets thanks to a fine innings from Adam Parker.
Parker finished 93 not out and Matt Clarke weighed in with 30 as the home side won with nine balls to spare.
Keswick had totalled 187 for 9 with Imran Khan top-scoring with 39 and Richard Webster adding 36. Adam Sharrocks took 3 for 31, Parker 2 for 26 and Tom Wilson 2 for 25.

Cup shocks for Blackpool and Morecambe

But there were defeats for Blackpool, Morecambe and Darwen.
Blackpool lost by five wickets at Bolton League side Horwich for whom veteran South African Grant Long scored 52 not out to steer his side home.

Blackpool had again disappointed with the bat, making 139 in 43.5 overs as Luis Reece top-scored with 22.
Andrew Walton took 5 for 28 for Horwich and Phil Cavill 3 for 22.
Despite using seven bowlers, Reece being the pick with figures of 2 for 28, Blackpool could not defend their low total and lost with ten overs to spare.

Blackpool spokesman Andy Griffiths commented: "Jamie Hogarth was absent with a hand injury sustained at work (a nail hammered through the muscle of his left hand, which narrowly missed the nerves) and Alex Smith was absent with an ankle injury suffered in the warm up of the league game the previous day, which forced him to drop down to No 10 in the batting order.
"Steven Mercer made his first 1st XI appearance of the season and Michael Taylor was drafted in as a late replacement for his first game for Blackpool this season Michael has been playing at University in Manchester, and will be available to us full-time once his educational commitments are completed from 31st May.
"Horwich had some very promising young players in James Reynard and Phil Cavill, whilst veteran skipper Grant Long showed the application required to take his team to victory, the second time he has led his team to victory against Blackpool in four years."

A depleted Morecambe side went down to a 16-run defeat at Dalton. Former Barrow all-rounder Justin Quint was Dalton's main contributor, hitting 80 in his side's total of 190 for 8. Gareth Pedder took 4 for 30 and Graham Lee 3 for 44.
Mark Woodhead led the Morecambe reply with an innings of 59 and wicket-keeper Damian Gudgeon hit 33 as the visitors were dismissed for 174, Quint taking 2 for 20.

Darwen crashed to a seven wicket home defeat at the hands of Roe Green. Stuart Hampson, coming in at number eight, hit 73 not out to help his side reach 201 for 9 in their 45 overs, Danny Jones taking four for 25. But Roe Green romped to victory with nearly 16 overs to spare, wicket-keepeing opening bat Justin Kenyon unbeaten on 90 and captain Jones completing a fine all-round game with 52.

Kendal progress in ECB Cockspur Cup against Preston

McDonald and Williams provide late resistance

By Michael Latham

A familiar scene Terry Hunte in full flow at Kendal

Kendal moved into the quarter-finals of Group 4 of the ECB Cockspur Cup and a home tie against Lytham after a resounding 90-run victory over fellow 3D Sports Northern Premier League side Preston.

Kendal's imposing total of 213 for 8 was due largely to fine contributions from skipper Ikram Ullah (65) and Terry Hunte (44).
The pair came together after the early dismissal of Mohammed Yasin, who was caught behind by Charlie Williams off deputy Preston skipper Rhys Williams for 3.
Ikram Ullah and Hunte added 84 for the second wicket and both looked in prime form. But Hunte, after hitting two huge sixes and five fours had reached 44 off only 42 balls before he was smartly caught by Rhys Williams off Lukman Vahaluwala to leave Kendal 93 for 2.

Terry Hunte was in typically aggressive batting form for Kendal

Ikram Ullah passed his fifty with a series of firm low drives all around the wicket and looked set for a century until he was unluckily run out backing up at the non-striker's end. A straight drive from Gareth Ashburner was deflected onto the stumps by bowler Javaid Hussain with the Kendal skipper stranded. He had made 65 off 73 balls with seven fours.

Ashburner fell shortly afterwards to leave Kendal 126 for 4, superbly stumped by Charlie Williams off Munaf Bavla.
But youngsters Donovan Du Plessis and Oliver Killiner then batted with great maturity to help steer their side towards the 200-mark. Du Plessis's dismissal, caught behind off Vahaluwala, for 34 sparked a mini collapse of four wickets for 11 runs including that of Killiner for 39, but Kendal had set an imposing total in their 45 overs.

Vahaluwala, bowling for the first time in several weeks after injury, returned figures of three for 44 while Munaf Bavla's off-spin returned one for 22 off 9 overs. Rhys Williams finished with two for 44.

Preston made a disastrous start losing Paul Mann in the first over, bowled by Stuart Parkin.
Joe Davies was adjudged caught behind down the leg side off Parkin, Vahaluwala was run out and then opener Sajid Patel caught by Yasin off Parkin for 27.When Munaf Bavla was caught and bowled by Yasin the visitors innings was in ruins at 40 for 5.
Jonathan McDonald, 17, showed a great deal of composure and excellent shot selection to delay the inevitable and restore some respectability to the Preston innings but was always fighting a lost cause.
McDonald finally found a stubborn partner in Charlie Williams and the pair added 58 for the ninth wicket before he was caught off Sam Cooper's off-spin for 37.
Charlie Williams finished 32 not out as Preston were bowled out for 123 in the 40th over.
Nick Lewthwaite's lively medium pace helped him to the best return of three for 18 with Parkin (two for 32) and Yasin (two for 19) also returning good figures for Kendal.
