Lancashire CCC fielded a Colts side in the League Division 1 for the first time in 2010 and played each member club once, all away from home with the points counting in the final table. After the Colts application was approved initially by the League Exectutive on a one year trial basis the move was seen as a success by all parties and the Colts will once again enter the League in 2011
The Colts won three and lost seven of their 13 games, with 1 draw and two abandonded games and earnned 79 points.
Jason Swift, the Performance Analyst at Old Trafford and an accomplished Level 3 coach and Bolton League cricketer, captained the side in most of the games. Mike Watkinson, the Lancashire Cricket Director also captained the side in one game as did Second XI captain Andrea Agathagelou. The Lancashire Academy Director was also closely involved in the project.
Writing in the Lancashire CCC magazine Spin, John Stanworth reported: "The Lancashire Colts Team have played in the Northern League for the first time this season and it has been a positive move. I wasn't so sure how it would work out at the start of the season, but with the sides we've been able to put out it has been beneficial. It has been a perfect opportunity for the players to continue with the progress they have made through the winter and for us to see them regularly in live cricket matches. Our thanks go to the Northern League for their positive move in accommodating the Colts team in their structure".
Cricket Director Mike Watkinson wrote "Our Colts team is enjoying a valuable season and is delighted to be invited by the Northern League to participate in 2011"
The Colts made a fine start with a fine 9 wickets victory over Fleetwood at Broadwater, Chris Tipper taking 5 wickets for no runs as the home side were dismissed for 104, Lewis Bentlet hit an undefeated 47 in the Colts reply.
Leyland defeated the Colts side by 2 wickets in a thrilling game at Fox Lane on May Bank Holiday Monday and the Colts then went down to defeat by just five runs at Stanley Park against Blackpool after another intriguing game.
Liam Watkinson hit the season's best score for the Colts making 76 as they defeated Chorley by 101 runs at Windsor Park., Tom Bailey taking 5 for 18 to dismiss the home side for 113
The Colt's game at Lancaster was abandoned but not before Jordan Clark, who went on to make his first-team debut before the end of the season made 43. The game at Preston was also rain-reduced but the Colt's bowlers performed well to stifle the home side's run chase and earn a winning draw
After losing by six wickets at Barrow, despite making a highly creditable 191, the Colts went down by three wickets at Kendal despite Watkinson hitting 69 in their total of 195. The game at Morecambe was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
Perhaps the outstanding result of the Colts season was a seven wickets win at 2008 champions Netherfield when Marl Walling hit an unbeaten 68 to overhaul the home sides 213. The former Leyland all-rounder Tom Foster, who left the club mid-season to join Leigh CC captained the Colts side that day
The Colts then went down to defeat at Darwen with the home side's talented teenaged all-rounder Kamran Anwar hitting 50 not out and taking four for 37. The Colts season closed with defeat at Carnforth by 5 wickets and by just two wickets in another finely-contested game against 2009 champions St Annes. Teenager Nathan Armstrong hit 75 to help steer St Annes past the Colts total of 199
The Colts used nearly 60 players during the season with Astley Bridge CC batsman Avhinavan Arumagan making most runs with 219 at an average of 43.80. Vernon Carus CC bowler Tom Bailey took eight wicket at 11.63. Northern League cricketers Alex Davies (Darwen), Liam Livingstone (Barrow), Yakub Bhamji (Darwen) and Henry Thopmson (Leyland) all represented the Colts in 2010
