Match Day 26th May 2003

DEFEATS FOR MORECAMBE, NETHERFIELD
... AND PRESTON RETURN TO THE TOP

By Gerry Wolstenholme

There were two surprises in the Bank Holiday Monday round of Northern Premier League fixtures in that bottom of the table Lancaster soundly thrashed second-placed Morecambe and Kendal defeated local rivals Netherfield. The latter result is probably not too much of a shock as Kendal, on their day, are capable of beating any other side in the league.

Lancaster dismissed Morecambe for only 92 and it was thanks to Tommy Clough and Gareth Pedder who put on runs down the order that they reached that total. Graham Barnes took 5-40 and Renier Munnik had three wickets. The Lancaster openers then carried on the good work and were not parted as they raced to 94-0 to record the club's first victory of the season by 10 wickets

As for Kendal, they batted first and made only 116 with Marc Hadwin taking an impressive 7-28 and Terry Hunte top scoring with 67 and Simon Little with 27 being the only other batsman into double figures. However the Kendal total was 17 runs too many for the talented Netherfield side who were bowled out for just 99 with Kevin Howarth the most successful bowler with 4-11 and Pieter Strydom top scoring with 39.

Fleetwood carried on their good work of the weekend as they made short shrift of a poor Blackpool side who could muster only 115 with Mark Lomas making a top score of 34. John Wright made a speedy 60 in Fleetwood's reply and with skipper Michael Clinning making the winning run they cantered home before six o'clock by eight wickets at 116-2.

Darwen's fortunes took a turn for the better after Saturday's beating and their 153-7 was 62 runs too many for Chorley who were bowled out for just 91. Gary Jackson continued his good run of form with 52 and although Stephen John took 4-55, Jeff Hacking bettered that return in Chorley's reply as he took 4-17 to see Darwen home. Twenty-six by Neil Senior and Nigel Heaton were the best efforts for Chorley.Leyland Motors also had a good day as they made 202-8 with James Aspinwall leading the way with 50 and Julian Edwards taking 4-73 for Preston. David Makinson was on top form when Preston batted and he finished with 7-13 including a hat-trick.

Preston and St Annes played out a thrilling draw as the home side made 175-9 with Oliver Clayson and Munaf Bavla both making 37 and Geoff Love taking 5-45 for St Annes. The reply faltered from the beginning and after Love, 25, and Steve Twist, 33, made a stand wickets fell regularly. Adam Cotton made 36 and then it was left to Richard Thomas and Michael Baer to hold out for 10 overs as Preston could not take the final wicket. St Annes closed on 155-9 to secure the draw with Pervez Shah taking 5-39.

CLINNING LEADS THE WAY FOR FLEETWOOD VICTORY

Blackpool 115, Fleetwood 116-2

By Gerry Wolstenholme

Fleetwood skipper Michael Clinning led by example at Broadwater on Monday as he bowled an admirable spell of 18 overs in the Blackpool innings to take 3-18 and then he was at the crease to score the winning runs as his side replied to 115 all out with 115-2.

The only thing he did wrong was to lose the toss and Mark Lomas elected to bat. Even that decision went Clinning's way for with only a leg bye on the scoreboard Chris Simcock played on to Steve Hill and Fleetwood were on their way. Chris Barrow and Lomas added 33 for the second wicket before the former fell to a catch by John Wright at short extra cover for 15. A seemingly out of sorts Deon Kruis then accompanied his captain in a stand of 22 before Lomas, 34, also fell to a catch by Wright, this time at short mid-wicket off Clinning.

Kruis was next to go for four, made from 44 balls and with two lives. He edged Dave Fish to Clinning at slip and Blackpool were 60-4. It was 67-5 when Paul Danson fell leg before wicket to Fish and 67-6 when, the next ball, Paul Sidebotham went the same way. Steve Mercer and John Caunce, two local lads, made a good effort to rescue the innings and they had taken the total to 84 when Caunce, 12, went fatally back to Clinning and was bowled.

Mercer was then run out for 16 at 97-8 and it was left to wicketkeeper Martin Hackett, with a Blackpool bet of 19 not out, to take his side to the final 115. Clinning bowled Dave Higham for nought and Ross Parker, on his debut, was caught by Dewhurst off the returning Steve Hill for one and Blackpool were all out in 55.5 overs. Hill had 3-32, Fish 3-57 and Clinning 3-18.

Fleetwood's reply began in grand style with John Wright playing shots all round the wicket and with Michael Dewhurst proving the admirable foil. The pair took the total to 68 before Dewhurst edged Kruis through to Hackett and was gone for 12. Wright went on to 60 when, much to his disgust, he pulled a rank long hop from Parker straight into the hands of Kruis at mid-wicket. His fine 60 had come from just 48 balls with one six and eight fours.

Lloyd Ferreira, 20 not out, and Michael Clinning, 12 not out, then administered the last rights as Fleetwood reached 116-2 to record an eight-wicket victory in only 23.1 overs and yet another game was over around six o'clock.
