Match Day 24th July 2004

LEADERS THRASHED; ST ANNES ROUTED

By Gerry Wolstenholme

It was an interesting round of games this last weekend in the Northern Premier League with League leaders Netherfield soundly beaten at Broadwater, St Annes routed for the lowest total of the season at Vernon Road and Barrow picking up their third win of the season at the expense of Lancaster.

Netherfield turned in a dreadful performance at Fleetwood after batting first and losing their top five for just 19. Fortunately for them the dependable Grahame Clarke remained and he made 55 out of a final total of just 126 in which wickets were shared but Steve Hill's 3-18 was the best return. And then to compound matters the Netherfield bowling was not up to its usual standard and Fleetwood raced to victory without losing a wicket at 130-0 with John Whalley making 76 not out and John Wright 54 not out. And for the first time for quite some time Netherfield picked up 'Nil points'!

Second placed Morecambe duly mopped up Leyland and won by 134 runs as they batted first and made a massive 276-6 before declaring. Charl Langeveldt made 156 and Gareth Peddar 56 while Nick Milner finished on 31 not out. James Wright battled on manfully to take 3-88 for Leyland who were then shot out for 142 by Langeveldt, 5-48 and Jono Gates, 4-17. Steve Pallett made 34 and Moin-ul-Atiq 31 for the losers who remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the table.

While the other town team was losing, Leyland Motors defeated Blackpool by 46 runs after they had made a modest 161 all out to which David Makinson made a top score of 38 and Matt Watkinson made 26 and Andrew Makinson 25. Justin Kreusch took 4-46 and Paul Danson 3-10 before Blackpool, after openers Steve Mercer, 31, and Danson, 21, had given them a reasonable start, collapsed. Thereafter only Steve Metcalf with 23 did anything of note as they were bowled out for just 115 with David Makinson taking 6-34.

Rain interfered with the game at Preston where visitors Darwen batted first and made 200-8 with Gary Jackson top scoring with 54 and the Cordingleys, Gareth and John, making 47 and 44 respectively. Pervez Shah was the most successful Preston bowler with 3-40. Preston only managed 43 overs in reply before rain stopped play and by then they had made 132-4 thanks to 46 from Raouf Akbar, 44 from Sam Seadon and 21 from Munaf Bavla.

At Lune Road Lancaster batted first and made 158-9 with Renier Munnik continuing his good form with 47, David Heywood making 43 and son Craig making the next best score of 19 as Rawl Lewis took 4-58 and Peter Lawson 4-81. In Barrow's reply Lewis made 51, Shaun Miller 48 and James Riley was there at the end with 33 not out as Barrow won by seven wickets at 159-3.

And it was disaster at St Annes for the home side as they were shot out for a measly 35 by Chorley who had made only 137. But it proved 102 runs too many for the home side for whom Adam Cotton's nine was the best effort as Stephen John had figures of 11-7-8-7 in a dramatic ending to the game. Nigel Heaton had top scored for Chorley and he was left stranded with 34 not out as Nick Woods, 26, and Michael Critchley, 20, made the best of the rest as Stephen Twist took 4-34 and Haroon Patel 4-47.

ACTION REPLAY:

NETHERFIELD LEATHERED

Netherfield 126, Fleetwood 130-0

By Gerry Wolstenholme

When first in the table plays joint second in the table it is not usually a one-sided contest but that is what it turned out to be at Broadwater on Saturday as leaders Netherfield suffered a humiliating 10-wicket defeat at the hands of Fleetwood. On a track that held no real terrors for the batsmen they gently succumbed for a very modest 126 all out and then proceeded to hand Fleetwood the game by some wayward bowling which, coupled with some powerful hitting, meant that at 130-0 the home side had won with 36 overs of the game remaining.

It began disastrously for the visitors as Chris Parry was dismissed from the first ball he received when he edged Steve Hill to the ever-dependable Doug Marillier at slip and that was 1-1. Craig Walmsley then played a head-in-the-air drive, missed and was bowled by Tom Blundell for one at 3-2. Gareth White, looking in good form, and Dale Benkenstein took the total to 19 at which point three wickets were lost.

Benkenstein, six, edged Blundell to slip where Marillier took the catch low to his right and White, 12, played all round a leg stump ball from Hill and was bowled. And then Tommy Prime was run out without facing a ball as he and Clarke had a mix-up in calling and Andrew Clough's throw from gully found the Netherfield skipper well short of his ground. Ben Haddrick failed to score but at least he was able to keep Clarke company while the latter advanced the total to 32 a which point Adam Sharrocks behind the stumps took an edge from Haddrick off Hill.

Graeme Dodds, eight, helped Clarke to raise the total to 74 before he fell to a catch at short mid-wicket by Clough off Dave Fish and then Netherfield lost the crucial wicket of Clarke. He had been given two lives at short mid-wicket on 38 and behind the stumps of 43 but he did not escape for a third time when he tried to cut a ball from Clough that lifted on him and Marillier at slip took the catch. Clarke had gone for an eye-catching and typically powerful 55 made from 88 balls with 10 fours.

Scott Clement, 19 not out from 60 balls, and Marc Hadwin, 14 from 46 balls, then showed some application that had been lacking from the top order, Clarke excepted. With a mixture of defence and occasional attack they took the total to 125 before Hadwin skied Fish for the bowler to take the catch around the extra cover area. Stuart Nixon was then run out for nought as he tried for an improbable two to retain strike for Clement and Netherfield found themselves all out for 126 with Hill taking 3-18, Blundell 2-15, Fish 2-36 and Clough 1-15.

John Whalley set the tone of the Fleetwood reply from the start as he creamed three fours off Clement's first over. From then on there was no looking back and he and John Wright simply made the Netherfield bowling look distinctly ordinary although Clement did beat Wright consistently for a couple of overs without ever finding the edge. And, on 21, Wright escaped a possible dismissal when a ball from Hadwin appeared to bowl him round his legs but despite the Netherfield claims, the umpires, after conferring, ruled in the batsman's favour.

That was more or less all as Whalley drove a huge six off Hadwin and then, with his 13th four, settled the match in Fleetwood's favour by taking the total to 130-0 in just 21.4 overs. He finished with 76 not out from just 49 balls and Wright was 54 not out from 81 balls with nine fours. It was very much Fleetwood's day and Netherfield will quickly want to forget it!
