3D SPORTS NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE

BARROW HOLD SWAY IN FIRST DIVISION

Gerry Wolstenholme

A magnificent start to the season for Ian Allington's Barrow side sees them lead the 3D Sports Northern Premier League table by six points at this early stage. On Saturday they comfortably defeated Fleetwood to register a 15-point victory, their third win of the season. Batting first they made 138-9 with Iain Kermode top scoring with 40 and Pasan Wanasinghe making 34 while Tom Blundell and South African professional Kyle Smit both took four wickets, the former for 33 runs and the latter, bowling unchanged, for 75. A weakened Fleetwood side could then muster only 101 with the returning John Wright making 24, James Ellis 20 and Chris Stanhope being last man out for a top score of 25. Barrow, for whom Justin Quint took 5-25 and Kermode 2-6, thus won by 37 runs.

Ben Hornby made 50, Lyndell Richardson 33 and Ryan Nelson 37 for Carnforth as they made a modest 183 against Morecambe with Gareth Peddar taking 5-57 and professional Werner Coetsee taking 4-31 for the visitors. Coetsee then made it an excellent all-round day by making 91 as Morecambe won by six wickets with 184-4 with Mark Woodhead making 33 and Mark Lomas leading his side to victory with 29 not out.

Rain interfered with the game at Shap Road where play did not get underway until 1-15pm and then the Kendal innings was interrupted. At one point they were going well and were approaching 100 with only one wicket down but then something of a collapse left them reeling at 133-9 from 38 overs. Ikram Ullah with 28, Kevin Howarth with 23 and Terry Hunte, with 37, were the top scorers as Tim Barry, 5-47, and Iain Burstow, 4-23, shared the wickets. The impressive Michael Walling made 49 for Lancaster who won in the final over by two wickets at 135-8 with Burstow blasting 26 not out from 11 balls and Chris Miller taking 4-39 and Graeme Aldridge 3-42.

A low scoring encounter at Fox Lane saw high-flying Leyland defeated by Chorley who bowled the home side out for 89 in 42 overs, courtesy of Stephen John's 4-35, Guarav Dhar's 2-20 and Billy Smith's 2-21. Only David Makinson with 26 not out made more than 20 with Chris Parkinson's 16 being the next best effort. Leyland, and David Makinson in particular with figures of 22-11-33-3, then made Chorley battle hard for victory and captured six wickets as Chorley made it with four wickets to spare at 90-6, Stephen John making 30, Jack Catterall 26 and David Naylor being there at the end with an undefeated 12.

In a battle of teams in the basement at West Cliff, Blackpool came out on top by 104 runs as they posted 169-9 and then bowled Preston out for just 65. Justin Kreusch made 62 for Blackpool but of the rest only Tom Reece, 24, and Paul Danson, 20, made much impression as Lukman Vahaluwala had a good day with the ball, taking 6-33. But the Blackpool bowlers were just too good for Preston who could make only 65 to which Pip McDonald contributed 18 and Bilal Asad 14 as Richard Gleeson took 3-3, Adam Parker 3-20, Kreusch 2-11 and Luis Reece 2-0 in 1.4 overs.

Finally at St Annes it was a draw with St Annes batting first and making 220-6 and Darwen replying with 179-8. For St Annes Adrian Darlington made a top score of 72, Ian Austin adding 52 and Adam Cotton 40 not out. For Darwen, Gareth Cordingley was the only batsman to make a significant contribution as he made a fine 71 and Atif Ashraf made 38 and Yasim Patel 37. Professional Shane Harwood was back to bowling at full throttle and took 2-44 from 17 overs while Austin had 3-47 and Ben Dowling 3-41.
