Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (in association with 3D Sports) Results Saturday 6 June 2009

Leaders Chorley saw their overnight lead cut from 16 points to eight as reigning champions Netherfield flexed their batting muscles at Parkside Road. Chorley, captained by Andrew Holdsworth in the absence of Jack Catterall had won six of their last seven league games, the other being abandoned but came a cropper in a rain-reduced game that probably was decided by the toss.
Netherfield captain Chris Parry inserted the visitors in a game reduced to 43 overs-per-side and saw Will Moulton thrash his first Northern League century, scoring an outstanding 107 not out off 93 balls including five sixes and nine fours.
The Bretherton based Moulton, who comes from a family bakery dynasty, shared an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 169 in 28 overs with Australian professional Chris Hartley whose unbeaten 70 came off 108 balls and included one six and six fours.

Chorley's imposing total of 209 for 3 would have been enough to at least secure a winning draw in most games but Netherfield are experts in run chases. In-form opener Craig Walmsley hit 49 but Chorley's opener Matt Parry proved the most successful bowler in the game, snapping up four wickets for only 30 runs in his 15 overs.
At 114 for 6 Netherfield looked to have settled for a draw but highly-rated teenaged wicket-keeper/batsman John Huck had other ideas. Huck hit a brilliant unbeaten 87 off 63 balls including two sixes and ten fours and steered his side home with seven balls to spare in an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 97 in 9.5 overs with Cumberland county off-spinner Chris Miller who finished 29 not out.

St Annes, meanwhile, made short shrift of Lancaster at Lune Road as Sri Lankan Test player Dinuk Hettiarachchi took 5 for 16 to help dismiss the home side for 125. Stephen Twist weighed in with three wickets and Zafir Patel another two as Jamie Heywood provided the main resistance with a fighting 49.
Former Pakistan test player Atiq Uz-Zaman then hit an unbeaten 64 that included seven fours and three sixes as the visitors hurried to an eight-wickets win in just 15.3 overs. Atiq shared an unbroken third wicket stand of 89 with outstanding all rounder Twist who finished 45 not out.

The most dramatic game of the day was at Fox Lane where Kendal, re-energised by the arrival of South African professional and captain Ross McMillan secured maximum points after a thrilling victory over Leyland.
McMillan made a bold declaration on 225 for 6 after 43.5 overs after Kevin Howarth's 65 and Terry Hunte's 89 provided the mainstay of their challenging total. Hunte's innings came off only 114 balls and included 13 fours and one six. Meanwhile, Howarth faced 76 balls and hit eight fours and two sixes.

Leyland looked dead and buried at 107 for 9 after McMillan took four wickets and the promising Jack White another three. But Leyland captain David Makinson, the former Lancashire county player, then shared a last-wicket stand of exactly 100 in only 49 balls with James Rounding. The pair took their side to the verge of a famous victory before Makinson was adjudged leg before wicket to Stuart Parkin for an innings of 89 off 80 balls including 11 fours and one six. Rounding finished 20 not out.
Long-serving Kendal scorer and league official David Sykes described Makinson's innings as the 'most remarkable display of destructive batting' he had seen in 23 years scoring in Northern League cricket.

Preston are lurking dangerously in third place, eleven points behind the leaders, after securing maximum points against Fleetwood at West Cliff with a 36 runs victory.
In a match reduced to 46 overs-per side Preston amassed 181 with Lukman Vahaluwala hitting 68 including eleven fours and one six and sharing a fourth-wicket stand of 90 with Adam Parker (44). Adam Breakell and Chesney Hughes each took three wickets for Fleetwood.
Anguillan born West Indies U19s representative Hughes, who this week signed a two-year contract with Derbyshire, hit 38 in Fleetwood's reply but the visitors were bowled out for 145 despite Mike Clinning's 48 off 74 balls. Preston professional Bilal Asad took three for 23 and Parker weighed in with a spell of three for 12.

South African born batsman Charles Boucher hit a superb 119 for Morecambe, his fifth Northern League hundred, but his side, captained for the first time by Tommy Clough had to settle for a winning draw against bottom placed Carnforth at Lodge Quarry.
Boucher faced only 99 balls and hit 16 fours and four sixes, sharing a second wicket stand of 102 with Phil Dennison whose 53 included eight fours and one six.
Carnforth's veteran medium-paced bowler John Denwood emerged from the carnage with five for 70 as Morecambe reached 271 for 7 before Clough declared.

In reply Carnforth's outstanding wicket-keeper/ batsman Ryan Nelson hit his maiden Northern League century to steer his side to a comfortable draw and maximum batting points.
The left-handed Nelson batted throughout the 51 overs for an unbeaten 126, the highest score in the league so far this season. Nelson faced 143 balls and hit 16 fours and two sixes as Carnforth closed on 184 for 5, despite Graham Lee's spell of three for 43.

Morecambe have confirmed that Mark Lomas has relinquished the captaincy of the club and has rejoined East Lancashire CC in the Lancashire League. They are expected to confirm the registration of Kendal wicket-keeper/ batsman Ikram Ullah. Ullah did not play for Kendal against Leyland but his replacement, Donovan Du Plessis enjoyed a successful day, taking six catches behind the stumps in his side's victory.

The game between Barrow and Darwen fell victim to the weather after an overnight rainstorm left the Ernest Pass Memorial Ground waterlogged. Four of Darwen's nine games have been abandoned.
