FURNESS BUILDING SOCIETY ( INCOPORATING 3D SPORTS) NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE

Rain ruins Bank Holiday programme

By Michael Latham

Blackpool's John Mounsey top scored with 37

The Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (incorporating 3D Sports) suffered a virtual Bank Holiday wash-out with all the Division One games abandoned and results gained in only two Division Two games.

The Division One games at Darwen (versus Fleetwood), Kendal (versus Carnforth) and Preston (versus Chorley) were all abandoned without a ball being bowled, a flock of Canadian geese settling on the square amidst the puddles at Birch Hall, Darwen at the allotted starting time.

Morecambe's game against defending champions Netherfield did start but the home side reached 30 for the loss of opener Mark Woodhead before the rains came

At Lune Road Barrow openers Jonathan Miles and deputy professional Alistair Gray, a prolific batsman from Western Province in South Africa, had taken the score to 29 without loss against Lancaster before the game was abandoned.

Most progress was made at Vernon Road where league leaders St Annes were in with a good chance of a 12-point haul for a win abtting second when the game was abandoned at 7pm.
Visitors Blackpool, invited to bat in a game commencing at 4-15pm and reduced to 25 overs-per-side, had posted 116 for 5 in their allotted overs.
Top scorer was opener John Mounsey, a former Palace Shield cricketer in his first season in the Northern League, who was run out for 37.

Blackpool's deputy pro Pierre Joubert, a highly rated South African playing for Werneth in the Central Lancashire League, was caught and bowled by Stephen Twist after making 22.
Andy Furniss, the former Fylde captain, hit an unbeaten 29 to steer Blackpool towards a competitive total.

In reply St Annes had reached 47 for 1 off 12 overs when the rains returned.
Atiq-uz-Zaman was unbeaten on 21 and fellow opener Gareth Evans, bowled by Richard Gleeson for 18, was the only wicket to fall.
