Leyland win at St Annes to close gap at top

Liam Livingstone hit a superb 97 not out for Barrow

St Annes stay top of the Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls) despite losing at home to defending Champions Leyland at Vernon Road.

With second-placed Chorley inactive Leyland to within nine points of the leaders but Chorley have two games in hand. St Annes have played 15 games and have 148pts with Leyland second (15-139) and Chorley third (13-128). Netherfield have 127 pts and Morecambe 119.

Elsewhere, Lancashire Academy player Liam Livingstone was left stranded on 97 not out, just short of what would have been his maiden Northern League hundred in Barrow's convincing seven wickets win over Morecambe at Ernest Pass.

The 17-year-old all-rounder, who also represents Cumberland, batted superbly on a drying pitch. Barrow captain deputising for the injured Chris D'Leny, he spearheaded his side's successful runs chase, in reply to Morecambe's 153/8. After Morecambe pro Anwar Ali took two quick wickets, those of Barrow's prolific pro Pieter Malan pinned leg before for 3 and Rob Lightfoot bowled for 12, Livingstone re-built the innings in a match-winning stand of 114 with Robin Adams.

Adams was superbly caught behind by Ikram Ullah off Chris Williams for an invaluable 25 off 77 balls as he played a supporting role to Livingstone's eye-catching stroke-play.

With Livingstone on the verge of his hundred, to mark father Steve's 50 th birthday celebrations occasional bowler Phil Dennison was brought into the attack. Dennison conceded a no-ball which was smashed for four to mid-wicket by Livingstone as he moved to 97 not out. Dennison's next ball then went for five wides down the leg-side to end the game.

Livingstone faced 109 balls and hit 17 fours and one six in a superb batting display.

After the square was under three inches of water overnight Morecambe were invited to bat on a green pitch. They struggled to 52/6, Ikram Ullah making 24 before Dennison and Tommy Clough repaired the innings with a fighting stand of 64. Clough was caught by Malan off Graham Dawson for 31 and Dennison stumped by Tom Milligan off Livingstone for an invaluable 48 off 75 balls. Reg Cupit made 14 not out. Daryl Wearing bowled superbly to take 3/39 with Dawson and Malan each taking two wickets.

Morecambe only fielded ten players in the game as wicketkeeper Lewis Edge had to withdraw due to his partner going into labour. Barrow sportingly provided the visitors the use of a substitute fielder.

Leyland won a superb game at Vernon Road by three wickets with one over remaining. Atiq Uz-Zaman hit a superb 97 off 113 balls for St Annes, adding 109 for the first wicket with teenager Nanthesh Kiruparan who made 38. Off-spinner David Fisher later proved highly effective in pinning back the home side's total, taking 5/32 off eight overs with Leyland skipper David Makinson taking 3/53.

Leyland pro Brett Pelser calmly steered his side home in a tense finish, making an unbeaten 63 off 80 balls. Opener Luis Reece made a high-class 74 off 79 balls, an innings described by St Annes captain Andy Kellett as one of the best he had seen from an amateur batsman in the league for many years.

But St Annes pro Dinuka Hettiarachchi kept his side in the game with a typically prolific spell of 5/55 off 24 overs and Leyland were wobbling at 126/5 until Andrew Makinson and James Rounding leant Pelser valuable support. Leyland wicketkeeper Adam Coates damaged a finger in the field and would only have batted in an emergency.

Cumberland fast bowler Richard Gleeson demonstrated his growing batting prowess with a match-winning 72 in Blackpool's three wickets win over Kendal at Shap Road. Coming in at no6 after Blackpool lost four wickets for 32 in reply to Kendal's 155/9, Gleeson and Alex Smith repaired the damage. Smith made a patient 56 off 158 balls before he was stumped by Gary Baker off Stu Parkin.

There was last-over drama; with the scores level Parkin bowled two dots and Gleeson was then pinned leg before after hitting his highest score for his home town club and his first NPCL Division One half-century. He faced 78 balls and hit eleven fours and one six. After another dot ball James Smith and Steven Mercer scrambled a bye to win the game with one ball remaining, Parkin finishing with 3/47.

Earlier Gleeson caught and bowled Kendal's Kiwi Test star Jamie How for a duck on his way to 3/47 off 15 overs. Mercer weighed in with 3/37 off 19 overs as Terry Hunte again bolstered Kendal's batting with 54 off 79 balls, skipper Chris Miller hitting an unbeaten 24.and wicketkeeper Baker a valuable 37 off 112 balls after opening the innings.

Lancaster skipper Mike Stevens steered his side to an eight wickets win at Lune Road with a superb unbeaten 94 off 109 balls. Stevens and Jamie Hirst (34) posted 105 for the first wicket as Lancaster surpassed Carnforth's 153/8. Darren Moore made 48 off 100 balls for the visitors, Tom Barnfield hitting 30 as Ben Simm bowled unchanged to 6/55 off 25 overs.

Marc Brown hit an unbeaten 51 off 110 balls to help Netherfield to victory by seven wickets at West Cliff. Preston made 123/8, opener Sajid Patel 45 off 90 balls as Netherfield's Australian pro Ben Laughlin bowled unchanged to take 5/38 off 25 overs. Lukman Vahaluwala took 3/32 off 18 overs in Netherfield's reply.

Darwen's eighth wicket pair of Kamran Anwar and Sam Munns helped their side record a tense three wickets win at Broadwater. Darwen were 111/7 in reply to Fleetwood's 139/9 but the two batsmen held their nerve to see their side past the target. Skipper John Cordingley was Darwen's top scorer with 36 as Sam Bell took 3/31. Earlier wicketkeeper Dean Bell opened with 34 for the home side, Darwen pro Zimmy Khan taking 3/51 off 19 over, Niall Burke 2/28 off 13 overs and Chris Wade 2/28 off 12 overs.
