Match Day 8th July 2017

The Northern Cricket League Review

DIVISION ONE:

Barrow v Blackpool

Blackpool stay fifth and one place above Fleetwood, after stopping the rot with an eight-wicket win at Barrow.

Chopping and changing their substitute professionals since the injured Anurag Verma returned to New Zealand has not been conducive to consistency for the Stanley Park club, though they hit the jackpot with Saturday's special guest.

Chris Williams from Pennine League club Middleton CC claimed 7-34 from 15 overs to blast Barrow out for just 83 after 40.5 overs at Ernest Pass.

Home captain Toby Mowat made an unbeaten 50 but watched the carnage from the non-striker's end as none of his team-mates were able to stay at the crease.

In fact, the other 10 Barrow players only managed 24 runs between them. The six who followed Mowat to the wicket contributed with five as the rest fell without scoring.

Opener Matt Houston scored an unbeaten 42 to seal victory over the second-bottom visitors at 84-2. Fittingly, Williams was at the crease when the win was secured after 23.2 overs.

Chorley v Penrith

Chorley remained in contention at the top of Division One after a hard fought 32 run home victory against Penrith.

Andrew Holdworth's team posted a more than competitive total of 208-7

Edwin Moulton batted the full 50 overs for an undefeated top score of 73 off 148 balls. Holdsworth also contributed with 49 off 41 balls.

Penrith's main wicket taker was Greg Hall who returned figures of 3-55.

In reply, Penrith were all out for 176 off 41.3 overs, Ian Oakes returned figures of 3-35 while Penrith Sub Professional Shanuka Dulaj posted 62 from 70 balls.

Leyland v Kendal

Kendal pulled away from the relegation places in Northern Cricket League Division One after a shock 64 run win over league champions Leyland at Fox Lane.

The Auld Greys gave a debut to former Durham, Northumberland and Sussex player Martin Speight. Speight who is the head of cricket at Sedbergh School and the coach of Kendal also kept wicket after Richard Dakin was unavailable for the game.

Kendal who batted first were all out for 148 off 49.2 overs.

The second wicket partnership of 54 between Zacchary McCaskie and Ben Phillips was the main stay of the innings, McCaskie top scored with 33 off 50 while Phillips contributed with 24 off 39 balls.

Edward Price batting at number 8 chipped with 31 off 47 balls, while Karl Cross returned figures of 3-42.

In reply Kendal bowled Leyland out for 84 off 40.4 overs, Marcus Hill returned figures of 3-18 before Jason Dawes claimed 3-34.

Chris Miller weighed in with 2-18 before Saeed Bariwala picked up figures of 1-12.

Morecambe v Preston

Morecambe fell just short of victory after Preston came away with a winning draw at Woodhill Lane.

Visiting skipper Sajid Patel won the toss and elected to bat first as Preston were bowled out for 175.

Geeth Malinda 21 and Patel 35 opened and they started well, until the former was bowled by Jamie Cassidy 1-38.

Patel also departed with sub professional Saeed Anwar Jnr 3-51 claiming his first wicket of the day, Ryan Pearson with the catch, and Yasin Patel (34) then became another Anwar victim with Viraj Bhatia collecting the catch.

Lukman Vahaluwala 34 did his bit with the bat for Preston but Adam Derham 4-26 struck thanks to a Damian Gudgeon catch, while Eddy Read 1-23 claimed his sole wicket of the day when Cassidy caught Irshad Desai for a duck.

Jitendra Kumar 2 was then run out, Derham and Gudgeon combined to remove Yasin Boda 13 and Anwar took the wicket of Balaaj Khan 11 to give the hosts a fighting chance of victory.

Rizwan Ali 1 and Andrew Starkie 0 also fell as Preston were all out for 175, Sabbir Patel finishing on 10 not out.

Tommy Clough played his part with the ball, despite not taking any wickets he finished with figures of 0-28 in his nine over spell.

In reply, Bhatia fell for just eight when he became Vahaluwala's first victim, caught by Malinda, and Mark Woodhead managed 18 before being run out by Kumar.

Standing in for Ashan Priyanjan, who has been recalled by Sri Lanka, Anwar Jnr was the mainstay of the Morecambe reply.

He scored an impressive 80 not out as he tried to take the game to Preston, while captain Pearson managed 18 before being caught by Boda off the bowling of Rizwan Ali 1-41.

Adam Derham put in a decent performance, hitting 26 runs in his innings, but Sabbir Patel 2-55 removed him with the help of Boda with another catch.

Eddy Read was run out for just two while brother Laurence fell for a duck to Patel as Morecambe's run chase started to grind to a halt.

Tommy Clough 10 reached the double figure mark but he too fell, Malinda running him out, leaving Anwar Jr and Luke Pearson (0 no) unbeaten at the crease with time running out.

It was a close-run thing but Morecambe were ultimately eight short, finishing on 167-5. The Woodhill Lane team picked up seven points from the game but they remain bottom of the Northern Premier League.

Netherfield v Lancaster

Netherfield Cricket Club climbed 24 points clear at the top of Northern Premier League after a dominant 187-run victory over Lancaster at Parkside Road.

Ben Barrow's first innings knock of 86 off 110 balls and Obus Pienaar's 68 off 75 saw Netherfield post 235 before Nathan Chambers ripped through with a return of 5-27, leaving Lancaster all out in reply for 48 off 20.4 overs.

Netherfield batted first, but it was a poor start as Josh Dixon was trapped LBW early on by Liam Moffat.

However, Barrow and Tom Williamson pushed the score onto 59, with Williamson impressing after posting a good knock of 28 off 35 deliveries.

Williamson's innings came to an end after picking out Jamie Heywood off the bowling of Ben Simm.

Barrow and Pienaar pulled the game away from the visitors with an imposing third-wicket stand of 115 as Netherfield raced onto 174.

Lancaster broke the partnership when Barrow, who hit 10 fours and a six, was run out.

Netherfield ran into some trouble though, as the last seven batsmen scored just 15 runs. The problems began when Kasun Madasanka picked up three quick wickets to dismiss John Huck, Pienaar and Lewis Edge.

Lancaster piled on the pressure as Simm trapped Brad Earl LBW before collecting the wicket of Daniel Ingham, who picked out Ian Perrieman. The wickets continued to fall as Mark Clarkson was bowled by Madasanka.

Netherfield were all out when Chambers was bowled by Madasanka, who returned figures of 5-54.

In reply, Netherfield made a great start when Danny Welbourne picked out Huck off the bowling of Chambers, before Chambers picked up his second wicket when Charlie Swarbrick was caught by Clarkson.

Clarkson trapped Jamie Heywood LBW while Lancaster toiled onto 12-3, before Chambers completed his five-wicket haul by removing Kieran Moffat, Madasanka and Ian Perrieman, as the visitors collapsed onto 35-6.

Ingham, brought into the attack, picked up the wicket of Simm, who was caught by Clarkson, before the New Zealander bowled Paul Dawson.

Marc Hadwin claimed his first wicket to see off Reuben Orr who was caught behind by Edge, before Ingham completed his return of 3-12 by bowling Scott Sparks as Lancaster were all out, having fallen a long way short of their target.

St Annes v Fleetwood

St Annes moved up to second in the table after a hardfought 3 wicket win over Fleetwood.

Matthew Grindley starred with a first innings return of 3-35 as Fleetwood were all out for 158 off 49.3 overs. Joseph McCluskie kept the runs ticking over with a top score of 54.
