The Northern Cricket League Review

Round 19 of the Northern Premier League threw up the suprise result of the season so far with bottom club Eccleston (Chorley) winning their first game of the season against league leaders Chorley.

Kendal beat Fleetwood to clsoe the gap to three points, Garstang won and are a further ten points behind, St Annes defeated fourth placed Longridge. The Blackpool v Netherfield and Penrith v Leyland games were abandoned

The win by Eccleston (Chorley) does not save them and along with Penrith are both relegated

Blackpool v Netherfield

This fixture was reversed to be played at Netherfield, unfortunately the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled

Chorley v Eccleston (Chorley)

Chorley won the toss at Windsor Park and invited the visitors to bat first, Eccleston (Chorley) made 182-9 in their 50 overs thanks to Matthew Ashcroft 57 and Martyn James Brierley 41 supported by Adam Nottis 14no and Cameron Smith 14no

Will Moulton was the Cholrey leading wicket taker with 5-50 from 15 overs with Edwin Moulton 1-5 off 6, James Dunn 1-10 from 7, James Lee 1-40 off 8 and Joshua Pistoius 1-66 from 14

In reply the Chorley innings collapsed and were bowled out for 129 in 42.3 overs, Roshen Silva was top scorer with 31, the only other players to reach double figures were Zayn Wadiwala 25, Kyle Dixon 23 and Will Moulton 11

The wickets were shared amongst the visitors bowlers with Cameron Smith 3-20 form 10 overs and Nick Fowler 3-26 off 15 supported by Thomas Foster 3-11 from 3.3, Reece Thomas 2-34 off 8 and Jack McKenna 0-18 from 6.

This was the first win of the season for Eccleston (Chorley) in the Northern Premier League but unfortunately it also meant that with St Annes winning they were relegated.

Garstang v Fulwood & Broughton

Garstang won the toss at the Riverside Sports ground and asked the visitors to bat first, Matthew Smith and Jon Fenton opened, there was early success for the hosts with Matthew Smith caught by Luke Smith off Waris Khan for 2, 3-1

Ben Rosbottom came in at three and with Jon Fenton they moved the score along, their partnership was 143 when Ben Rosbottom was caught behind by Matthew Crowther off Michael Walling for 56 (120 balls), 146-2.

Hareen Buddila came in next and kept the scoreboard ticking over until both were out on the same score, Hareen Buddila went first caught by Luke Smith off Michael Walling for 15 (14 balls), 178-3, Jon Fenton followed bowled by Waris Khan for 101 (141 balls) (10x4, 2x6), 178-4

The visitors were now in the last over and lost two wickets going for the runs, James McWilliam was run out by Michael Walling for 10 (8 balls), 190-5, Lewis Wellings followed run out by Matthew Crowther for 0 (3 balls), Fulwood & Broughton closed on 191-6 in their 50 overs with Muhammad Zaid 1no (1 ball) and Ben Parkinson 1no (1 ball).

The Garstang bowling was Waris Khan 2-33 from 8 overs, Michael Walling 2-47 off 10, Joel Anthony Derham 0-29 from 9, Danny Gilbert 0-33 off 8 and Ian Walling 0-45 from 12.

Michael Walling and Luke Smith opened for the champions but their partnership was broken by Khalil Patel bowling Luke Smith for 11 (21 balls), 28-1, Matthew Crowther was the hosts number three, he battered carefully but with the partnership on 61 Hareen Buddila trapped Matthew Crowther lbw for 16 (62 balls), 89-2

Mark Walling was the new batsman but fell early caught by Muhammad Zaid off Dom Jackson for 2 (8 balls), 104-3. next in was Joseph Pearson and was scoring at a run a ball until he was caught by James Lupton off Lewis Wellings for 11 (12 balls), 117-4.

Hugo Croft joined Michael Walling, Hareen Buddila claimed his second wicket Hugo Croft stumped by James McWilliam for 1 (5 balls), 125-5, Tom Wells came to the wicket and disaster for the hosts he was run out by Lewis Wellings for 4 (6 balls), 131-6

The game looked to be going in favour of the visitors but Michael Walling was host's hope for victory, Ian Walling was the new batsman, he hit a couple of lusty blows but fell caught by Ben Parkinson off Lewis Wellings for 23 (20 balls), 169-7.

Danny Gilbert was Michael Walling's next partner and they took the score within nine runs from victory when Lewis Wellings had Danny Gilbert caught by Muhammad Zaid for 8 (12 balls), 183-8, Joel Anthony Derham came to the wicket but was run out for 1 (1 ball), 184-9

We were now in the last over with the visitors needing one wicket or the hosts seven runs, Michael Walling was facing, he hit the first ball for six bringing up his century and two balls later hit the run to give Garstang victory on 192-9 in 49.3 overs. Michael Walling carried his bat was 103no (149 balls) (7x4, 3x6) with Waris Khan 0no (2 balls).

For Fulwood & Broughton Lewis Wellins took 3-32 from 6.3 overs, Hareen Buddila 2-46 off 15, Khalil Patel 1-28 from 7, Dom Jackson 1-41 off 12, Jon Fenton 0-11 from 6 and James Lupton 0-23 off 2

This win means the champions are 13 points behind the leaders Chorley with three games to go

Kendal v Fleetwood

Kendal won the toss at Shap Road and put the visitors into bat, Andy Drake and Declan Clerkin opened and both were out with the score on 4, Toby Tyson bowled Andy Drake for 4 (6 balls), 4-1, The first ball of the next over Chris Miller bowled Declan Clerkin for 0 (1 ball), 4-2

The two new batsmen were Jeremy Davies and Charlie Clark, Chris Miller struck once again having Jeremy Davies caught and bowled for 10 (13 balls), 23-3, next in was Harry McAleer who lost his partner Charlie Clark lbw to Chris Miller for 14 (27 balls), 32-4.

Adam Sharrocks joined McAleer but with only six runs added Harry McAleer was caught by Lewis Richardson off Freddie Fallows for 5 (20 balls), 38-5, things did not improve for the visitors with Chris Miller claiming his fourth victim Joseph Davis lbw for 0 (4 balls), 39-6

Joseph Warwick was Sharrocks next partner but did not last long caught by Chris Miller off Freddie Fallows for 1 (7 balls), 40-7. Will Reader was next in and tried to stay with his partner, Rongsen Jonathan dismissed him bowled for 3 (18 balls), 47-8.

Rizwan Patel came in at ten but disaster for the visitors as Adam Sharrocks was run out by Rongsen Jonathan for 6 (20 balls), 49-9. The Fleetwood innings closed on 64 all out in 24.3 overs with Rizwan Patel caught by Chris Miller off Freddie Fallows for 12 (18 balls) with Jack Wilkinson 1no (13 balls).

Chris Miller took 4-22 from 8 overs with Freddie Fallows 3-8 off 7.3, Toby Tyson 1-12 from 5 and Rongsen Jonathan 1-14 off 4

Freddie Fallows and Oliver Tyson opened and had taken the score to half the runs required when two wickets fell, Freddie Fallows was bowled by Jeremy Davies for 23 (19 balls), 32-1, next ball Jeremy Davies bowled Max Winskill for 0 (1 ball), 32-2

Oliver Tyson and new batsman Rongsen Jonathan looked to be cruising to victory with ten runs needed to win when five wickets fell for three runs, Rongsen Jonathan was first caught behind by Harry McAleer off Declan Clerkin for 14 (17 balls), 55-3, one run later Oliver Tyson went bowled by Declan Clerkin for 11 (26 balls), 56-4

Declan Clerkin then trapped the new batsman Finlay Richardson lbw for 0 (2 balls), 56-5. Two runs had beed added when Jeremy Davies bowled Bradley Earl for 2 (14 balls), 58-6, Jeremy Davies claimed his fourth wicket bowling Lewis Richardson for 4 (11 balls). 63-7

To the relief of the home side the winning run was a leg bye so the Kendal claimed victory on 65-7 in 16 overs with Kuldeep Singh 0no (3 balls) and Chris Miller 1no (3 balls)

For Fleetwood Jeremy Davies took 4-21 from 7 overs, Declan Clerkin 3-27 off 8 and Rizwan Patel 0-12 from 1

The win now puts Kendal only three points behind Chorley who lost to bottom club Eccleston (Chorley).

Penrith v Leyland

Leyland won the toss at Tynefield Park and invited the hosts to bat first, Ollie Greenwood and Eddie Robson opened but were soon parted Eddie Robson caught behind by Adam Sexton off James Critchley for 0 (4 balls), 1-1, Harsha Vithana was in at three but lost his partner to the Sexton/Critchley combination, caught behind by Adam Sexton off James Critchley for 4 (26 balls), 6-2

James Bowman was next in but had made only four ( 20 balls) when he was bowled by Joe Shackleton, 18-3. Greg Cameron replaced Bowman and with Vithana had nearly doubled the score when Geeth Kumara had Cameron stumped by Adam Sexton for 13 (21 balls), 35-4,.

Iain Critchley struck for the visitors taking the prize wicket of Harsha Vithana caught by Zak Willox for 11 (59 balls), 35-5. Alister Craig was joined by Dylan Simpson, Geeth Kumara bowled Alister Craig for 6 (14 balls), 47-6.

Ten runs had been addded with Dylan Simpson 5no (20 balls) and James Ellis 7no (15 balls) when the game was abandoned with Penrith on 57-6 in 30 overs

The bowling figures for Leyland were James Critchley 2-7 from 7, Geeth Kumara 2-28 off 8, Iaian Critchley 1-7 from 7 and Joe Shackleton 1-10 off 8

St Annes v Longridge

St Annes won the toss at Vernon Road and chose to bat first, Yohan De Silva and Luke Jardine opened and gave them a good start, Jake Durnell broke the partnership Yohan De Silva caught by Luke Platt for 22 (40 balls), 55-1

Nathan Bolus was the St Annes number three, he battled away but Rory McDowell bowled him for 9 (34 balls), 87-2, Tom Higson joined Luke Jadine but four runs later Jardine was bowled by Jake Durnell for 54 (79 balls), 91-3.

New batsman Nathan Armstrong was finding runs hard to come by and became Jake Durnell's third victim caught by Zac Christie for 4 (29 balls), 113-4. Alec McGloughlin came to the wicket and began to attack the Longridge bowling.

The partnership was 22 when Tom Higson was caught by Zac Christie off Tom Howarth for 31 (41 balls), 138-5. Next in was Lukman Vahaluwala and with ten overs to go the St Annes pair went on the attack which 95 runs scored as St Annes closed on 233-5 with Alec McGloughlin 63no (44 balls) (3x4 5x6) and Lukman Vahaluwala 46no (33 balls) (6x4, 2x6).

For Longridge Jake Durnell took 3-52 from 15 overs, Tom Howarth 1-17 off 3, Rory McDowell 1-81 from 14, Ollie Mullin 0-17 off 5 and Matthew De Villiers 0-62 from 13

Joshua Mullin and Tom Howarth opened but with the score on 32 two wickets fell, Tom Howarth was bowled by Lukman Vahaluwala for 16 (34 balls), 32-1, two balls later Matthew De Villiers fell lbw to Lukman Vahaluwala for 0 (2 balls), 32-2.

Zac Christie was next in but quickly fell bowled by Harry Birkman for 2 (10 balls), 39-3. Luke Platt replaced Christie, the introduction of Tom Higson was not good news for the vistitors, with his second ball he had Luke Platt caught by Yohan De Silva for 7 (12 balls), 63-4.

Zach Proctor came in but was out caught for 1 (8 balls) by Nathan Armstrong off the last ball of Higson's next over. 69-5. Higson then claimed his third wicket new man Tom Turner caught by Mitch Bolus for 0 (2 balls), 73-6. opener Jushua Mullin was battling at the other end watching his partners depart, James Whitehead was his next partner but soon fell lbw to Yohan De Silva for 0 (13 balls), 84-7

Jake Durnell was in at nine but became Yohan De Silva's second wicket caught and bowled for 6 (10 balls), 92-8. St Annes sensed victory, Alec McGloughlin had Ollie Mullin caught behind by James Bradley for 0 (9 balls), 94-9.

Tom Higson closed the Longridge innings on 101 all out in 36.5 overs having Rory mcDowell stumped by James Bradley for 0 (6 balls). Joshua Mullin carried his bat and remained undefeated on 57 (116 balls).

The St Annes bowling was Tom Higson 4-16 from 8.5 overs, Lukman Vahaluwala 2-15 off 8, Yohan De Silva 2-16 from 6, Alec McGloughlin 1-13 off 6, Harry Birkman 1-25 from 6 and Mitch Bolus 0-12 off 2

This result means the Longridge hopes for the title are greatly diminished and St Annes are safe from relegation.
