Great win for Lancaster

Hundred in vain for Nelson
By Michael Latham

Carnforth's Ryan Nelson hit 110 in vain

Lancaster achieved arguably the result of the day in the ECB National Club Championship when the defeated reigning Bolton League champions Farnworth Social Circle at their Piggott Steeet ground.

Ben Simm and skipper Michael Stevens each took three wickets as Social Circle were dismissed for 147. Tim Barry and Charlie Swarbrick each collected two victims in an excellent display of out cricket, Barry returning two for 18 off his nine overs.
In reply Lancaster slumped to 19 for 3 but David Heywood made an invaluable 47 off 82 balls to steady the ship and Danny Welbourne hit a priceless 28 not out off 51 balls to take the visitors through by two wickets with seven balls to spare.

Ryan Nelson's off drive beats the bowler's despairing dive

Carnforth opener Ryan Nelson hit 110 but his side went down by 12 runs at Westhoughton's impressive new St George's Oval ground. Former Chorley favourite Neil Bannister top-scored with 76 in his side's 202 as Carnforth worked hard in the field, veteran John Denwood taking two wickets for 17 off his nine overs.

John Denwood bowled a miserly spell for Carnforth

Nelson batted superbly for the visitors hitting eight fours and two sixes and facing 131 balls. But with wickets falling regularly at the other end he was taking on the Westhoughton bowlers virtually single-handed and was last man out, run out off the last ball of the penultimate over attempting to get the strike as Carnforth finished 190 all out.
