Morecambe progress in LCB Knockout Cup

Another century for Mohammad Zaman Khan
By Michael Latham

Blackpool skipper Paul Danson took 5 for 9 in his side's win at Fulwood & Broughton

There were mixed fortunes for Northern League clubs in Sunday's cup competitions.
Morecambe made progress in the Lancashire LCB Knockout Cup but there were defeats for Preston and Netherfield.

In the ECB National Club Competition Blackpool, Darwen and St Annes progressed, the latter at the expense of Lancaster.

Morecambe defeated Winton at Woodhill Lane on the Duckworth/Lewis method after rain interrupted the game. Phil Dennison hit 85 and Phil Thornton 42 as Morecambe reached 228 for 7 in 45 overs. Winton were 101 for 5 after 21 overs and Morecambe won by 5 runs (D/L). Morecambe skipper Tommy Clough bowled superbly to take four for 27.

Netherfield lost to Denton St Lawrence at Parkside Road in a rain reduced game that began at 3-25pm. Netherfield reached 175 for 7 in their 31 overs, Ben Haddrick making 82 and pro Nick Kruger 37. Rashid Nadeem took three for 15 for Denton St Lawrence
The visitors were in trouble at 42 for 4 but were rescued by Ghulam Abbas who hit a match-winning 66 not out to steer his side home by three wickets with 2.5 overs to spare.

Former Chorley batsman Josh Tolley starred for Woodhouses who beat Preston by four wickets. David Fisher top-scored with 50 for the visitors, pro Bilal Asad and Andy Roberts both just falling short of half-centuries. But they were eclipsed by Tolley who hit a magnificent 110 to propel his side to a four wicket win.

In the ECB National Club Competition St Annes defeated Lancaster by 14 runs at Vernon Road. Charles Boucher was St Annes' top scorer with 57 as they reached 214 for 8, Lancaster captain Michael Stevens taking three for 35. Lancaster were bowled out in reply for 200 despite a defiant unbeaten 60 from David Heywood as Atiq Uz-Zaman and Dave Bartholomew each took three wickets for St Annes.

Darwen pro Mohammad Zaman Khan continued his fine season with a magnificent 128 as John Cordingley's men beat Prestwich at Heys Road by 27 runs in a high-scoring game. Zaman Khan hit 128 and shared a second wicket stand of 153 with skipper Cordingley who was run out for 78 as Darwen reached 271 for 3. The Darwen pro sustained a groin injury early in his innings and 2nd team captain Gary Jackson acted as his runner for his last 90 runs.

Prestwich made a valiant effort, Sam Holden hitting a superb 96 before he was caught by Alex Davies off Chris Clarke while Andrew Cook surpassed that with a fine effort to dismiss opener Johnstone from a skier. Prestwich fell just short on 244, Chris Clarke taking three for 63 and Niall Burke again underlining his emerging bowling talent with a match-winning four for 50.

Blackpool captain Paul Danson inspired his side's five wicket win at Palace Shield Premier Division side Fulwood & Broughton at Highfield.

The home side looked well placed for a big score as they reached 82 for 2, opener Mark Smith making 46. But Danson's introduction into the attack changed everything as he bowled Smith and went on to take five for 9 from 5.4 overs. The home side lost their last eight wickets for 55 runs as they subsided to 139 all out with 15.2 overs unused.

Match Report From Michael Moore

National Knock Out
Round 2
Fulwood and Broughton v Blackpool

Riding high on a string of successes, Danno`s Boys travelled down the M55 to the picturesque venue of Fulwood & Broughton, with high aspirations of progressing to round 3 and a home tie.Light rain delayed the startof the game by 15 minutes with no loss of overs and the home side batting first made merry against some wayward bowling from their NL opponents.

MRSmith (46)& skipper Richard Turner opened up with a 49 run partnership at 5 runs per over, before Turner following a straight 6 into the Elephant grass in the adjoining field (ball lost!), was trapped lbw next ball for 27 off the bowling of Andy Hogarth.Patel followed soon after bowled by Alex Smith for 0 playing a shot I am sure he will regret until his final day.!!

Smith was then joined by his chirpy wicket keeping brother who made all of the runs in their 18 run partnership when he was caught behind by Rob Sissons off Andy Furniss.
The Palace Shield side then showed how brittle their batting is as Captain Paul Danson wreaked havoc with his off spin, ably supported by his vice capt. Steve Mercer (2 for 27)

Danno returned his best figures for several years of 5 for 9 in 5.4 overs as the Sheld boys fell away to only 139 all out in 29.4 overs .....15.2 overs left unused!!

Although Blackpool ran out easy winners in the end, it was not without a scare or 2 as is their want. Most of the visitors` batsmen chipped in with useful contributions - Mounsey 20, including a big 6 off the mouthy MRSmith(1 for 37); Alex Smith21, Andy Furniss 22.
At one stage Blackpool peched precariously on 84 for4, but man of the match Danson struck a positive 33 not out at almost a run a ball, ably supported by no.7 Prash Aga(12not out) to take The Seasiders past Fulwood`s meagre total with 5 wickets and 10 overs to spare....comfortable enough in the end.

Danno`s Boys now entertain Northern from the Comp in round 3 the probable date being Sunday 27th June
Well done ,Fellers...a great weekend....I believe that makes it 9 wins on the bounce!. Keep `em coming. See you at nets.....Mick
