Darwen plan centenary celebrations

Big plans for One Year in One Hundred at Birch Hall

Cordingley resumes as captain

Darwen will celebrate their centenary year in 2011

Darwen Cricket Club aim to mark the club's centenary in style during 2011.

One hundred years after the name of Darwen Cricket Club first appeared on the scene, club committee, players and supporters have already formulated plans for the year ahead.

Cricket in the town dates back to the 19th century with a club known as Darwen Etrurians CC playing briefly in the Central Lancashire League and Ribblesdale League before folding in 1898. A new club re-formed in 1901 and at the 1910 club AGM the name was changed to Darwen Cricket Club.

Darwen moved to their present ground at Birch Hall in 1920 having previously shared Barley Bank with Darwen Football Club.

Among the functions planned are a pre-season gathering, a Centenary Sportsman's Dinner to be held at Ewood Park, a family fun day, a Twenty20 Borough challenge, a Duck Race, a Golf Day, a six-a-side challenge, a Crown Green Bowls competition, a treasure hunt and a challenge match pitting the current side against a team made up of former players and professionals.

Chairman Graham Ainslie is also planning a book on the centenary season with a working title of One Year in One Hundred and a special club calendar is being produced. A new Centenary flag will fly above Birch Hall as Darwen commence the 2011 season in good heart after a successful 2010 campaign.

It's very much a case of 'as you were' at Birch Hall with John Cordingley continuing as First XI captain for the Readers Cup holders and popular professional Mohammad Zaman Khan back for a second season after amassing over 1,600 runs in all competitions in 2010.

Alex Davies, a member of the ECB's elite Under-17s squad and Yakub Bhamji highlight the club's successful youth policy with both players being members of the Lancashire CCC Academy. Another talented teenager, Kamran Anwar is looking to maintain his progress after taking 50 league wickets last year.

Updates on Darwen's centenary year will be posted regularly on the site
