Leyland sign Overseas Amateur

Alex Keath

We are delighted to announce that Australian all-rounder Alex Keath will be joining Leyland Cricket Club as our overseas player for the 2014 season.

A right handed top order batsman and right arm seam bowler, 22 year old Alex is part of the Melbourne Stars squad for the Australian Big Bash Twenty20 tournament.

He made his state debut for Victoria in 2010 against the touring England side and also played against the England team during the recent Ashes tour as part of the Cricket Australia Chairman's XI in a game played at Alice Springs.

After investigating a number of options, first team captain David Makinson was pleased to have recruited such a highly rated player as Alex. He said, "Alex is a hugely talented all-round cricketer. He was highly recommended to me by my former team-mate at Lancashire and ex-Durham captain Nick Speak, who is now the batting coach of Alex's club side in Australia. As well as being an accomplished batsman, his style of bowling should be ideally suited to conditions in the North West. I am sure Alex will fit in well with our existing players and I hope he can have an impact across the whole club during the season."

Alex has previous experience of playing club cricket in England having appeared for Bishop's Stortford in 2012 and for Bournemouth in the Southern Premier League last season when he scored 601 runs including three centuries, as well as taking 31 wickets.

He plays club cricket for Melbourne CC in the Victorian First Grade competition. Alex was part of the victorious Australian Under 19 team at the 2010 Youth World Cup in New Zealand.

A multi talented sportsman, Alex was drafted by the AFL expansion franchise the Gold Coast Suns in 2010 but chose to play cricket over Aussie Rules.

Alex will be only the third Australian overseas player to represent Leyland in the Northern League after Leigh Gilmour in 1986 and Richard Chee Quee in 1990. We look forward to welcoming him to the club in April and hope he will have an enjoyable and successful time with us.
