Morecambe CC Preview for season 2014

Morecambe head into the new season with change being the key word at Woodhill Lane. The winter hasn't been kind to Morecambe firstly 1st XI skipper Mark Woodhead was forced to step down due to work commitments and then only a week ago their Australian professional Nick Stevens was told by Queensland he was unable to travel due to a troublesome knee injury which needed surgery.

Morecambe however have found an instant replacement in the captaincy department in Mr Morecambe, Tommy Clough who is excited about his side's potential coming into the 2014 season.

"Our winter has been a difficult one what with Mark stepping down and Nick picking up his injury, however we have a side full of potential. We showed real unity towards the end of last season and ended up with a well deserved Lancashire Cup spot for our troubles."

The new Morecambe skipper was pleased to announce the signing of South African Kelly Smuts as replacement for Nick Stevens.

"Kelly looks a top player he has agreed to come at really short notice with some great references. I'm sure he will provide an exciting brand of cricket which will complement our side this season."

The Woodhill lane outfit are looking towards another top 4 finish and Tommy wouldn't rule out a cup run.

"I'm not going to come out here and say we're going to win it, but with the right application we have a lot of talented lads who are well capable of reproducing last season's success and maybe throwing in a cup run for good measure"

Morecambe 2nd XI were of course NPL2 champions last season and helped develop talents such as Jake Smith who will be looking to impress in the 1st XI this term. They will also be looking to kick on under the leadership of the talented Phil Dennison.

Morecambe 1st XI begin their season at home to Fleetwood, but entertain East Lancs and Nelson at Woodhill Lane in friendlies before the season gets underway.
