Secretary's Report for 1989

The 1989 season will be remembered for the long hot summer weather which broke all known meteorological records.

No playing days were complete wash-outs and only three division one games failed to start.

Prior to the start of the season we were sorry to report the death of our Life President, Mr Maurice Naylor.
Maurice was a well respected, quiet spoken man who served the League over the years, previously as Vice Chairman and Treasurer.

The new President is Mr Norman Ellis who we warmly welcome.

Many records were broken last season, with Blackpool C C achieving a unique treble, winning the League Championship, Matthew Brown Trophy and Slalom Lager Trophy.
In addition, they won the prestigious Bass Lancashire Knock-Out Trophy.

The Club is to be congratulated on its success and thanked for bringing prestige to the League.

Netherfield C C had one of its most successful seasons ever, finishing Runners-up in the First Division, winning the Second Division Championship and the Blackledge Trophy together with the Cumbria Knock-Out Competition.

The Club twice created new League Division One batting records, by scoring 290-4 and then 292-3 respectively.
Graham Clarke and Carlisle Best each scored centuries in each match and created a new first wicket record of 246.

Graham created a Netherfield amateur batting record of 811 runs including three centuries.

It is disappointing to report that the Northern League XI again lost in the first round of the Manchester Evening News Inter-League Competition, on this occasion at the hands of the Ribblesdale League.
We must make an effort to reverse this trend in 1990.

At Junior level, the Northern League Under 18 XI, well organised by Clive Henderson, our newly appointed Assistant Secretary (Juniors) and ably lead by Peter Deakin from Leyland Motors won the North West Colts Trophy.

Your Executive exhorts all Clubs to build on this success by giving Clive 100% support in this vital role during 1990.

Following the issue of the Code of Conduct at the start of the season we are pleased to report a much improved position on disciplinary matters.
Continued self control and respect for others is vital if we are all to maintain the highest standards of the Northern Cricket League.

The Executive is pleased to announce that Matthew Brown will continue to sponsor Northern League Cricket during 1990.
We all thank them for their continued support and wish them success in the coming year.

On a personal note, may I thank my predecessor, Mr Tony Creasy, for his help and wish Marion and Tony a happy retirement.

Finally, the Executive hope that you approve of the new League Handbook and would welcome ant ideas you may have for future improvements.

Have an enjoyable 1990 season.

David Smalley, Hon Secretary
